The New “Moneyball”
In the movie “Moneyball,” we all learned that baseball is a sport of statistics – most importantly getting on base to score runs. Well, I will tell you that the hidden secret in all of baseball is stringing together walks or hits in a row to actually score runs. Never has this been the truth than on a brisk night in Lubbock Texas. The Red Raiders came into the D-1 Regional playoffs with a lot of momentum and talent. In the past 5 years, the program has been to the College World Series twice and never had that been accomplished in the school’s history. This was the year…it was all set up to host another Super Regional in Lubbock and this team had the best chance to win it all. Down 4 to 3, at home, with all the momentum and magic on their side, the Red Raiders were ready to steal the deal from a team who has never experienced an advance to a Super Regional.
The Red Raiders ending their storied season with runners in scoring position in the 9th inning. They were held scoreless in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings with at least 5 opportunities to score. The stat that said it all was 2 for 15 and that was hits with runners in scoring position. When you look at the winning team, they took every advantage of runners in scoring position and they strung together hits at key moments to take the Regional crown.
Great job Sam Houston State and good luck in the Super Regionals…
